A VISIT TO ST.MARY’S PARISH CHURCH
On Tuesday the 4th of August the Ladies replaced their usual Tuesday evening meeting with an afternoon visit to St Mary’s Parish Church.
were given a guided tour by Mr George Hows who had spoken previously at a Tuesday night meeting about how the church had developed through the years. It was decided that we would visit St Mary’s to enable Mr Hows to point out, in more detail, the windows and the general layout of the church.
We found that Mr Hows was an informative and entertaining guide, giving an excellent description of the 34 stained glass and 1 painted glass windows plus giving details of the other notable points in the church such as the Arch Deacons Stall and. the organ pipes. The Women’s Section provide flowers for the WW1 Memorial which is in a quite area of the church where you could sit and rest, there are also other war memorials in the church e.g. To the 156 Battalion Paras who were dropped into Arnhem in WW2. There is some interesting items from our local military unit i.e. R.A.V.C..
We all found the visit very interesting and most enjoyable and would recommend you visit St Mary’s should you visit Melton Mowbray

PARCELS TO AFGANISTAN
Melton being a Garrison town ie. having the R.A.V.C. and the D.A.C. within the town, it was suggested that we should do something for the Service Personnel in Afghanistan.
We thought it would be a good idea to send parcels out to lads and lassies to let them know that we are thinking of them and to show how very proud we are of them. We involved the local Belvior cubs in the project and they set about providing items for the parcels as part of their community badge award which was very successful. Most of the items donated were socks, sweets, games and fun items. We send dog biscuits and chews. We were fortunate enough to be able to send the parcels via our local Military Unit which meant they reached our local military unit personnel.
We have received letters of thanks from the recipients of the parcels plus visits from them when they returned home it was unfortunate that there was no Members of the W.S. when they came into our club to say thank you. The ladies have started to collect items for our Christmas parcels but we still continue to send parcels. If anyone would like to donate items to this worthwhile venture you, could contact the Melton Women’s Section via the Men’s Branch Office Tel. No 01664 852863 or by email bro107.mmbl@virgin.net
