WAR MEMORIALS TRUST

Patron: HRH The Duchess of Cornwall

President: Winston S Churchill

War Memorials Trust was formed in 1997 from the Friends of War Memorials.

The objects of the Trust are:-

    conservation when appropriate.
  2. To provide expert advice to those involved in war memorial projects and to facilitate conservation through grant systems.
  3. To work with relevant organisations to encourage their accepting responsibility for war memorials and recognising the need to undertake repair and restoration work to these monuments.
  4. To build a greater understanding of was memorials heritage and raise awareness of the issues surrounding war memorial conservation.

Grants awarded locally.

Egerton Lodge - The Town Estate was awarded a grant of £2500 towards the restoration of the terrace. This included replacing old tarmac with paving stones that originally were at the North Station in the town.

Great Dalby - In 2006 a project was undertaken on the memorial. The fence surrounding the monument needed to be repaired to ensure safety. The Trust awarded a grant of £215 towards this work.

Gaddesby - This war memorial is a granite obelisk in the south-west corner of St Luke’s Church in Gaddesby, Leicestershire. War Memorials Trust gave a grant of £215 to clean the memorial. The defective joints were re-pointed with lime mortar and the letter re-painted in white.

Hoby - This war memorial is a bronze plaque with an alabaster frame and the inscriptions are raised letters and gilded, and commemorate the men of the Parish who died in World War I. It is located on the north wall of the north aisle of All Saints’ Church, Hoby. In 2008, War Memorials Trust gave a grant of £805 towards the cleaning and repair of the memorial. The memorial had been damaged by water and bat urine.
